Doctor Who

a brief look at the doctor, daleks, cybermen, & the master

Doctor Who?

Doctor Who is really a question, rather than a name for the mysterious stranger who always seems to be there when an alien conspiracy is unfolding. Who he is, where he came from, and his reasons for being there, are always somewhat ambiguous for the people he inevitably helps:

Im The Doctor.

Doctor Who?

Just The Doctor.

The Doctor, as he likes to be known, is in fact a time traveller from an ancient and highly civilized race of beings known as The Time Lords, who live on a distant planet called Gallifrey, and who had unlocked the secrets of time itself. The Doctor is believed to be over 900 years old!

Doctor Who left Gallifrey to permanently roam time & space as a renegade or maverick Time Lord in his TARDIS (which stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space), a time machine that is dimensionally transcendental or in other words its bigger on the inside than the outside. The Doctors TARDIS is stuck forever in the guise of an old English Police box when its chameleon circuit malfunctioned on Earth. The Doctors Tardis is referred to as a Type 40, and is considered to be a bit of an antique as far as the Time Lords are concerned!

The antiquated Type 40 TARDIS

The Doctor spends his time visiting different planets, species, and events at different points in time and history, in each Doctor Who episode he seems to have a knack of arriving just as some evil alien plot is being hatched, which he naturally has to stop!

He has a soft spot for Humans, and has had a lot of adventures here on Earth, working with The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, or UNIT, and having taken a number of his time travelling companions, who participate in almost every Doctor Who adventure, from various periods in Earths history.

Although The Doctor looks very much like a Human, he is very different, with 2 hearts, and he has some kind of telepathic or symbiotic link to his TARDIS, which can not only travel in time, but can also translate any language in history so that The Doctor & his companions can not only understand it, but also speak it & read and write themselves.

Another special Time Lord ability revealed to Doctor Who viewers, is being able to regenerate his body when he has been mortally wounded, apparently it is possible to regenerate a total of 12 times, giving 13 incarnations, although his nemesis The Master has managed to overcome this regenerating a total of at least 15 times so far.

The 9th Doctor regenerating into the 10th Doctor

This regeneration results in The Doctor having a different body, and a new personality with its own quirks, but retaining his old memories from previous incarnations, meaning that people who knew the old Doctor Who wont necessarily recognise him if they meet him again.

There have so far been 10 Doctor Who incarnations, meaning that there are only 3 more Doctor Who regenerations left, unless The Doctor can find a way to cheat the system like The Master. Somehow I think he will find a way!

The 10 Doctors so far have been played by (clockwise in the picture):

  • Doctor Who no1 - William Hartnell
  • Doctor Who no2 - Patrick Troughton
  • Doctor Who no3 - Jon Pertwee
  • Doctor Who no4 - Tom Baker
  • Doctor Who no5 - Peter Davison

    The 10 Doctors

  • Doctor Who no6 - Colin Baker
  • Doctor Who no7 - Sylvester McCoy
  • Doctor Who no8 - Paul McGann [The Doctor Who Movie only]
  • Doctor Who no9 - Christopher Eccleston
  • Doctor Who no10 David Tennant

Doctor Who does not use weapons, he instead arms himself with a lowly sonic screwdriver!

There are lots of evil aliens on Doctor Who, but also a few Doctor Who favourites that we keep on meeting in different adventures, they usually have the kids heading for the back of the sofa! You can find out more about The Daleks, The Cybermen, and The Master below.

    Daleks

    The Fearsome Daleks

The Daleks are a race from the planet Skaro, who became mutants after a nuclear war. The Dalek originated from the Kaled (an anagram of Dalek) people who had been at war with the more peaceful Thals, but the Daleks were genetically altered by a brilliant, yet probably insane scientist called Davros.

    The evil genius Davros

Davros genetically engineered the Daleks to be without emotion, pity, feelings, or love, and also to obey commands without question, very much like a drone. The Dalek philosophy is simple. They are the supreme beings, and anything not Dalek must be exterminated (usually shrieked ex-ter-min-ate!). Eventually Davros himself was exterminated by the Daleks for not being racially pure.

The Dalek itself is a small, octopus like creature with a single eye, but is encased in an almost impregnable tank made from a very tough alloy called Dalekanium, which is not only armed with an awesome array of weapons, force field, and other features, but also acts as a kind of life support machine for the mutant Dalek, making the Dalek more of a cyborg than either a pure organism or machine.

The result is a fearsome emotionless killing machine intent on killing & destroying everything in the universe that is not Dalek, that is also almost impossible to stop.

The Daleks are the arch enemy of The Doctor & all Time Lords & have made regular appearances on Doctor Who becoming an iconic symbol. The Doctor has grappled with them on many occasions, on Earth & other planets, and was sent back to destroy them before they were created in the Doctor Who episode Genesis of the Daleks starring Tom Baker.

The latest series of Doctor Who have shown the Daleks to have a force field that is capable of evaporating bullets & other missiles, & they can now also ascend a flight of stairs, El-e-vate!

The Daleks have been believed to have been destroyed on many occasions, only for them to re-appear somewhere else, and this was the case after The Time War which destroyed all of the Time Lords except The Doctor, The Master, & perhaps one other (keep watching!). However, one Dalek ship escaped, falling through time, and gradually the Dalek Emperor rebuilt a Dalek army using the DNA of deceased Humans, Yuk!

However, they too were defeated by The Doctor & Rose Tyler, and that was thought to be the end of the Dalek race, until The Cult of Skaro appeared on Earth!

    The Cult of Skaro:

The Cult of Skaro with The Genesis Ark

The Cult of Skaro is a group of 4 Daleks who have enhanced intelligence, and are able to think analytically for themselves. Their purpose was to think like an enemy would think, and to devise new Dalek strategies and tactics to defeat the Dalek enemies.

Unlike other Daleks, the Cult of Skaro all have individual names, and they are also identifiable by a unique marking on their casing. The Cult of Skaro are:

Dalek Sec: Dalek Sec is the leader of the Cult of Skaro, and has an all black dalekanium casing. He overseas the activation of The Genesis Ark, a Time Lord prison ship containing millions of Daleks in the battle of Canary Wharf against the Cybermen.

In Daleks of Manhattan he absorbs or merges with the Human Mr Diagoras to form a new Dalek/Human hybrid, which he believes is the future of the Daleks. Unfortunately his comrades disagree & exterminate him for corrupting Dalek purity.

Sec - The Dalek Human Hybrid

Dalek Sec was the Commander of the Seventh Incursion Squad and led the attack on the Mechonoids on Magella before being promoted by the Dalek Emperor to the Cult of Skaro.

Dalek Caan: Dalek Caan was second in command of the Cult of Skaro to Dalek Sec, and oversaw the building of the Empire state Building in The Daleks of Manhattan. Dalek Caan disagreed with Dalek Secs decision to create a Dalek/Human hybrid, and eventually overthrows Sec, shortly before Sec is exterminated.

Dalek Caan is eventually the only remaining Dalek before he initiates an emergency temporal shift, making him probably the only Dalek in existance, which means I’m sure that the Doctor will meet him again.

Dalek Caan was the Attack Squad Leader of the Thirtieth Assault Group before being promoted by the Dalek Emperor to The Cult of Skaro.

Dalek Thay: Dalek Thay was third in command of the Cult of Skaro, and was the Dalek who sacrificed his panels to help in creating a new breed of Dalek in The Daleks of Manhattan. He was responsible for exterminating the Human Dalek Hybrid Sec, and was destroyed himself shortly after.

Dalek Thay was the Commandant of Station Alpha, the most secret Dalek research facility, before being promoted by the Dalek Emperor to the Cult of Skaro.

Dalek Jast: Dalek Jast played the least significant role in Doctor Who, betraying Dalek Sec shortly before being destroyed himself, Dalek Jast had fought at the battle of Canary Wharf against the Cybermen.

Dalek Jast was Force Leader of the Outer Rim Defensive Battalion before being promoted by the Dalek Emperor to the Cult of Skaro.

    The Cybermen

The new improved Cybermen - yikes!

Cybermen are a race of cyborgs who were originally the humanoid inhabitants of the Earths twin planet of Mondas, and were totally organic creatures. However, they began to replace various parts of their bodies with artificial replacements, until eventually they became more machine than humanoid, and they became cold, calculating, & emotionless, in very much the same way as the Daleks.

The Cybermen have also been intent throughout Doctor Who at conquering the universe by force, usually by the covert use of agents until they are ready to directly attack. They also enlarge their numbers by converting other humanoids into Cybermen, proceedure known as cyber-conversion.

In the latest series of Doctor Who, the Cybermen originated from a parallel Earth, in which a crippled genius called John Lumic, owner of Cybus Industries, sought to prolong his own life by transferring his brain into a steel casing. In anticipation of Governmental refusal to allow the process, he first created an army by Upgrading unwilling people to create a cyber-army.

In earlier series of Doctor Who the Cybermen have been efficeintly destroyed by of their adverse reaction to gold, with one future weapon being a glitter gun which fired gold dust, although the latest incarnation of Cyberman seems to have been improved to eliminate this problem.

The Cybermen have changed in appearance quite regularly over the Doctor Who series, with (in my opinion anyway) the latest version of the Cyberman being the most imposing & oppressive to date, they also physically look much more threatening.

    The Master

    Various incarnations of The Master

The Master is another Doctor Who classic arch enemy. The Master is also a timelord, but rather than being on the side of good as is The Doctor, he is also intent, like the other arch villains, intent on ruling the Universe, stating that he wanted to be The Master of all matter.

The Master also seems intent on, if not destroying, then at least humiliating The Doctor, and the pair have crossed swords many times.

The Master is a genius, sometimes it is suggested that he is more talented intellectually than The Doctor, although he never manages to defeat him. The Master also has the power to hypnotically control people by merely fixing them in his gaze & saying I am The Master, you will obey, and is a master of disguise and mass mind control.

In the latest series The Master made use of a kind of sonic screwdriver device, which had the ability to age tissue, which is closely related (I think) to his old favourite weapon, a Tissue Compression Eliminator which would shrink its target to the size of a doll, killing them in the process.

In The Deadly Assassin, The Master is coming to the end of his 13th incarnation & is seeking a way to continue his life by adding to the number of regenerations. He almost succeeds with a plan that would also have resulted in the destruction of Gallifray, but is foiled at the last minute. However, in The 5 Doctors he is offered a new regeneration cycle in return for his assistance, which suggests that the Time Lords have discovered a way to extend the 12 regenrations.

The latest series of Doctor Who has the Master firstly appearing as Professor Yana, with his Time Lord persona hidden inside a device disguised as an old pocket watch (as The Doctor did in Only Human), before regenrating & returning to modern day Earth in The Doctors TARDIS & becoming the Prime Minister of England under the guise of Harold Saxon.

The Latest Master & his Laser Screwdriver

His plot is to take over the Earth, he is finally fatally wounded by his wife, Lucy Saxon, and he refuses to regenrate. At the end of the episode his body is burnt on a funeral pyre, but an unknown female hand is seen to pick his ring from the ashes, probably for some future plot.
